2000 Years of Christianity
Anno Domini - the Year of Our Lord - 2000. Our modern calendar counts the years from the birth of Christ 2000 years ago. (In fact, thanks to a miscalculation in the Middle Ages, probably 2004 years ago!) This event in the small town of Bethlehem was to be one of the great turning points in human history.
Quite irrespective of one's religious convictions, it must be acknowledged that the birth of Jesus Christ set a course in history which has left no one in the Western World untouched. His teachings and his followers became one of the world's greatest religions. After the fall of ancient Rome, the Christian Church stood as sponsor to a new European civilization.
Christianity was to develop and influence every aspect of Western life, whether law and government, learning, architecture, painting, sculpture, music, medicine, agriculture, our very behavior towards others. Reason enough for the Austrian Mint to bring out a small series of four gold coins over the next four years dedicated to the Christian Millennia.
